Portable service pit lights are used to support commercial vehicle service pit operations. They can be applied to illuminate specific parts of the pit service area, while working on detailed tasks with bright lighting requirements. These portable fixtures are commonly utilized in major repair garages, minor repair garages and general area garages. The units may also be explosion proof or hazardous area Class I, Division 1 and 2 rated or unclassified, depending on the applicable service pit environment.

For major repair garages, Class I, Division 1 explosion proof lights are recommended to prevent unwanted ignition of gasoline and other gaseous fuels (properly ventilated oil change pits may use Class I, Division 2 hazardous area fixtures). Minor repair garages use Class I, Division 2 hazardous area lights. If adequately ventilated, unclassified luminaries may be installed in the automotive service pit.
