Service Pit Lights are industrial luminaries specifically designed for vehicle service pits (also known as automotive service pits). These grease or lube pits can be further classified as major repair garages, minor repair garages and general area service pits. The types of work carried out in vehicle service pits include oil changes, under chassis repairs, fluid replacement or transfer and patching. In automotive service pits, workers are prone to the following risks: falls, asphyxiation, explosions, fires and rough contact.

When addressing such risks, service pit lights must be deployed in the location. Due to the presence of flammable liquids with flash points below 38°C (100°F), such as gasoline and gaseous fuels, the National Electric Code (NEC) recommends utilizing Class I, Division 1 explosion proof fixtures for major service garages or lube pits. If ventilation is provided, the lights should support Class I, Division 2 explosion proof ratings. Class I, Division 2 hazardous area fixtures are suitable for minor service garages. If ventilation is provided, unclassified luminaries may be used in the oil change pit (Article 511.3). Service pit stations with adequate lighting can also prevent slips and falls by improving visual capabilities and reducing eye strain.
