Hunters who take the stand or go on the prowl after dark rely on their flashlights and spotlights to perform a variety of important tasks from scanning for prey, tracking game and illuminating dark paths without spooking any target animals.
While a bright, white light may seem like the obvious choice for improved visibility at night, the activity of hunting requires much more stealth than white light can provide. Most wild animals associate white light with humans which they equate with danger. Even if an animal has never encountered white light from a man made source, it will still spook at the sudden intrusion of a white flashlight or spotlight beam piercing a darkened landscape.
A spooked animal equals a lost opportunity. Luckily for hunters, there are other options that are much better suited to their needs. Those other options are spotlights and flashlights that emit red or green light which each have their own distinct advantages. The common advantage they both share is that red and green light typically do not frighten animals. Red light can be ideal for scanning large fields from closer ranges and green light is adept at illuminating possible targets at increased ranges for positive identification before the shot.
Red light is generally accepted by nighttime predator hunters to be the best option. When looking at an object illuminated by red light, the human eye is capable of picking up greater contrast which means that more fine details are visible on the object. When scanning a field for a coyote or other game predator, the increased visual contrast provided by red light can be the difference between spotting game and completely overlooking it.
Red light is also harder to notice from a distance than white light is. This helps hunters to maintain a stealthy approach either on the stand or while stalking game on foot. For hunters who employ night vision gear, red light is also ideal because it does not interfere with night vision or infrared technology. Red hunting lights also preserve a hunter’s natural night vision more effectively than hunting lights of other colors.
Green light is also seeing a boost in popularity among night hunters. This is especially true with hog hunters who have come to realize that green light makes it easier to locate the dark body that hogs have. Hogs love thick cover such as underbrush and dense forest, so any advantage in locating their darker bodies is worthy of consideration. One other great benefit is that green light does not attract annoying insects.
