LED Lighting and Effectively Managing Heat Production
Unlike traditional incandescent lamps which are designed to produce light by using the electrical resistance of a wire filament to radiate light energy and thus run extremely hot, LEDs on the other hand are quite sensitive to increases in temperature. Like traditional lamps, the lifespan of an LED is measured in hours, however, during the course of operation, the light output of an LED exhibits a gradual decline. [...] |

LED Lights, Lighting of the Future
The newest and most well regarded entrance into the lighting markets has been the LED. LEDs represent an entirely new way of producing illumination that bears very little resemblance to traditional forms of lighting. With LEDs, nothing is burned, there are no gases and no glass, and the energy to light conversion rate is much much higher. The energy to light conversion rate is so much higher in fact, that LEDs now produce on the order of 80% more light per watt than the incandescent bulb. [...] |

The Rise of LED Lighting: 50 Years of Development
Holonyak was perhaps one of the most visionary electrical engineering scientists of his time, proclaiming in 1963 shortly after he developed the first practical visible light LEDS that LED lighting would eventually replace the incandescent bulb. Not everyone shared his enthusiasm, and the slow advancements in LED technology that resulted from then plentiful and cheap electricity and cheap light bulbs served to help relegate LEDs to minimal use in low powered applications like indicator lighting [...] |

The Top Reasons for Considering LEDs in Simple Terms
The typical illumination grade LED usually used in lighting equipment is up to 80% more efficient than the traditional incandescent light bulb. This is usually measured by comparing how much light is produced per watt between the two different types of lamps. The typical incandescent bulb produces about 15-17 lumens per watt. This means that a 100 watt incandescent lamp will produce about 1700 lumens of light output. LEDs on the other hand produce around 60-90 lumens per watt. [...] |

NEMA Enclosure Ratings Basics for Electrical Equipment
NEMA ratings are guidelines published by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association intended to provide a homogenous system of rating electrical enclosures according to their various design parameters. NEMA ratings encompass a wide area of subjects such as protection against contact with internal parts, resistance to internal contamination from fluids, resistance to icing and external damage, and the enclosures suitability for use in various environments. Choosing LED Lights Based on Lumens and Wattage
For the most part, LED products produced by third parties and manufactured in countries such as China tend to be of lower grade and fail to meet many of their claimed performance specifications. It is also worth noting that LEDs and fixtures are often a joining of two or more manufacturers' products in order to keep production costs low. As a result, many LEDs used in specialized devices and fixtures may come from one manufacturer, while the electronics driving the LEDs and the housing may come [...] |

The Higher Cost of LEDs: The Reasons May Surprise You
China, with its heavy emphasis on developing its economic and political power, has seen an explosion of potential in the market for its rare earth minerals and as a result taken several steps towards managing this now almost indispensible resource. Manufacturers of everything from to cell phones, televisions, and solar power equipment and yes, LEDs, rely on a steady and adequate supply of these minerals. In 2010, manufacturers became quite alarmed when China announced its plans to cut back on it [...] |

Modern Lighting: Why LEDs are Leading the Way
Because of their solid state design, low power requirement, high efficiency and durable construction, LEDs offer a wide range of improvements over traditional light sources. Able to produce light in specific wavelengths, containing no gases, filaments or glass, and much smaller than traditional light sources, LEDs are a radically different way to produce light and as such, have much different properties than the traditional light bulb.
