Medium voltage transformers are medium-sized power distribution systems designed to step down exceedingly high voltages from an electrical grid system before it is passed to the utility customer (industrial facility, school campus, data center, residential neighborhood or commercial building).

The power distribution stations are offered in capacities ranging between 10 kVA and 5,000 kVA; as well as single phase or three phase. They can be used to reduce voltage drop and improve last-stage, localized power distribution. When it comes to voltage classification, medium voltage transformers handle input voltages exceeding 600V, while low voltage variants feature input voltages less than 600V.

The two main types of medium voltage transformers are oil filled and dry type, which refer to the unit’s respective method of insulation.

A pad mount medium voltage transformer is a type of grounded power distribution system for outdoor or underground use. Pad mount power distribution units are enclosed (no exposed wirings or cables), for deployment close to high-activity and public areas. This feature also allows the stations to be installed without fencing and minimal cabling, which results in lower costs and more reliable power connections.

Oil-filled (also known as liquid-filled or liquid-immersed) medium voltage transformers use mineral oil or other types of liquids to keep the station cool during operation. Designed for outdoor applications, this type of power distribution unit features a lifespan range of 25-30 years. Compared to dry-type transformers, liquid-immersed systems provide more effective and efficient cooling mechanisms. The units are also compact, because they do not rely on air movement to maintain operating temperatures.

Dry-type medium voltage transformers utilize aerial ventilation to maintain adequate operating temperatures, via cooling ducts, louvers and vents. The solid-state stations can be installed in both indoor and outdoor locations, due to the absence of flammable liquid. Because of this, dry-type variants are more suitable for applications in hazardous location work sites than oil-filled units.

With dry-type transformers, businesses do not have to worry about potential (and extremely dangerous) oil leaks, periodic liquid testing and monitoring, as well as stringent fire safety regulations commonly associated with oil-filled power distribution stations. For dry-type transformers, it is important to select a unit with a proper insulation class and enclosure rating.
