Are Higher Wattage Lights Brighter?
These days, businesses and consumers have numerous options, when it comes to purchasing energy efficient lights. In addition to decreased power consumption, buyers usually also want the brightest available light. [...]
Lumen vs Foot-Candles – Which Is More Accurate for Measuring Illumination?
When a customer is looking for lights, the most common question posed is “how bright is this light?” As lighting technology improves, the standard measurements of illumination aren’t always the most accurate in calculating a light’s output. Understanding how each rating is determined will help you choose the best fixture for an application. [...]
Using Ohm’s Law to Calculate Amp Draw
Many years ago, in a High School Physics class, we were introduced to Ohm’s Law. Simply put, Ohm’s Law states “The resistor's current I in amps (A) is equal to the resistor's voltage VR=V in volts (V) divided by the resistance R in ohms (O):” To most, it’s as confusing today, as it was the first time we heard it. By breaking it down, piece by piece, you can use this nifty tool to calculate the amp draw of nearly all electronic equipment, including LED lights. [...]
If LED Boats Lights Cost More, Why are They a Better Choice?
The result has been the development of efficient LEDs than now closely match the soft warm glow of the incandescent without giving up anything in terms of efficiency. Manufacturers of boat lighting have been quick to adopt these high grade LEDs into their fixture designs, and the result has been the explosive growth the LED boat light market.
LED Boat Lights in Commercial Fishing Operations
With the introduction of LEDs into the commercial marine lighting markets, fleet operators have begun realizing serious improvements over their old HID lighting systems. LED boat lights produce a much whiter and cleaner light, with greatly improved color rendering and contrasting capabilities compared to the low pressure sodium lighting they are replacing. The improved light quality of LED boat lights means skippers and crew can more easily monitor operations and make better decisions based on i [...]
Delivered Lumens versus Total Lumen Output: LEDs and Traditional Lighting Comparisons
For most forms of traditional lighting, since the light is radiated in all directions, we usually need to include reflectors, lenses and diffusers in order to direct as much of the light as possible towards where it is needed. The result of this is called delivered light, and it is a more effective measure of how well a lamp performs than simply taking into account total lumen production. For instance, if we take a simple 100 watt incandescent bulb producing 1500 lumens and put it into a simple [...]
LEDs and Contrast Threshold: More than Just Energy Efficiency
While much of the focus on Marine lighting has lately been on the reduced energy usage benefits switching to LEDs from Halogens represents, there is more to the story than just prolonging the charge time of your crafts batteries. If you search the internet or read the magazines dedicated to boating, youre likely to see all sorts of stories touting the great reductions in electrical drain on a boats energy reserves that LEDs produce and little else. [...]
Marine LEDs: Improved Light Quality and Efficiency
Still relatively new although gaining in popularity quickly, LEDs are the current growing trend in marine lighting. Although they have been present for decades in everything from remote controls to stereos, it is only the last 5 years that have seen LEDs begin making the transition into applications that were traditionally the realm of the common incandescent light bulb. [...]
LED Efficiency Poised to Change How the World is Illuminated
Unless youve been living in a cave and have no idea what an electric bill looks like, youve likely heard about LED lighting. With some suggesting that this technology has the potential to actually change the world, LEDs have in a short amount of time become an everyday household word. Its entirely possible that within the next ten years we may be wondering how we ever got by without them. [...]
LEDs vs CFLs: No Compromise Necessary
With the current trends in energy efficiency and conservation presenting a persistent and important presence on the world stage, it is only natural that energy efficient forms of lighting technology continue to receive increasing scrutiny. With over 60 billion dollars per year spent in the U.S. alone on energy for lighting, it is clear that there is great opportunity for increased efficiency and savings. [...]
The Popularity of LEDs in Marine Applications
If you need any evidence of the growing popularity of LEDs in the marine industry, you only need look to the catalogues and websites of most marine lighting specialists to find your proof. Of course, if youre the critical sort and require a little more than popularity to sell you on giving new technology a try, LEDs have plenty to back up the reasons for their popularity. [...]
Marine Lighting Applications and LEDs
The marine industry is one of the first and largest commercial sectors to capitalize on the revolution in electrical illumination that LED lighting technology represents. Since electrical lighting was first introduced into boating applications, designers in the boating industry have grappled with the need to provide adequate power for electrical systems while maintaining a practical rate of energy consumption on board a ship. [...]
LEDs: Giving Boaters the Upper Hand in Power Management
Ever since electrical equipment was first installed on a boat, managing onboard electrical power has been a major concern on everything from small sailboats to large yachts. Although electrical lighting was a major leap forward for marine lighting which at the time consisted of actual lanterns that housed a flame, it immediately created the problem of producing enough electricity to make its use practical. [...]
LEDs: A Natural Fit for Boating
LED lights have come a long way since their introduction into the marine industry. Rapid advancements in technology coupled with innovative designs have resulted in LEDs capturing a growing segment of the marine lighting equipment industry, with boat manufacturers now incorporating them into their new designs as a part of their standard equipment.
