Is Western Red Cedar a Good Alternative for Southern Yellow Pine Wood for Utility Poles?

Western Red Cedar and Southern Yellow Pine are both established wood species for utility poles, but their characteristics differ significantly.

By comparison, Western Red Cedar is valued for its natural decay resistance and relatively low weight, while Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) is recognized for its high mechanical strength, structural capacity and preservative-treatment characteristics.

Western Red Cedar

Western Red Cedar, commonly associated with the western red cedar species Thuja plicata, has a low density. This produces a lighter pole that can simplify transportation, handling, framing and installation. Its low weight is useful when poles must be manually handled or transported into locations with limited equipment access. Cedar also has naturally occurring extractives that provide resistance to decay and certain biological deterioration. However, natural durability should not be considered a substitute for an appropriate preservative system when a pole is intended for long-term ground-contact utility service.

Southern Yellow Pine

Southern Yellow Pine features high density and favorable strength-to-weight ratio. SYP poles provide greater bending strength and stiffness than many lower-density softwoods. This makes them well suited for applications involving high transverse loads, heavy conductors, transformers, communications equipment or significant wind loading. The higher density also produces a heavier pole, increasing transportation and installation requirements compared with Western Red Cedar.

Southern Yellow Pine is highly receptive to pressure treatment because its cellular structure can allow preservative chemicals to penetrate effectively when properly processed. This characteristic has made treated SYP an important material for utility poles requiring long-term resistance to fungal decay and insect attack. Western Red Cedar can be more difficult to treat deeply because of its characteristics.
