Choosing Between a Fold-over and Telescoping Mast for Your Portable Light Tower Application

Choosing between a fold-over mast and a telescoping mast for a portable light tower requires evaluating deployment method, structural construction, operating height and transportation requirements.

Although both mast configurations provide an elevated platform for lighting fixtures and other equipment, their mechanical designs produce different advantages for operators.

Fold-over Mast

A fold-over mast is constructed as a rigid vertical mast section mounted to a hinged base assembly. Electric or manually operated mechanisms (winch) can rotate the mast from a horizontal transport position to a vertical operating position. The hinged base must be engineered to withstand bending and mechanical loads produced while raising and lowering the mast.

Fold-over masts can be effective where rapid setup, mechanical simplicity and structural rigidity are important. Their straightforward mast construction can simplify inspection and maintenance, while the hinged arrangement provides direct access to equipment when the mast is lowered and folded over. This can reduce the need for personnel to work at elevated locations.

Telescoping Mast

A telescoping mast uses multiple nested sections that extend vertically from a compact retracted position. Each mast section is smaller than the section surrounding it, allowing the complete assembly to achieve considerable height while maintaining a relatively short transportation envelope. Telescoping designs commonly use aluminum or steel sections, depending on required structural capacity and operating environment. The overlapping sections require careful dimensional control, guides and wear-resistant interfaces to maintain alignment during deployment.

Telescoping masts are for applications where compact transportation and high operating elevation are priorities. This configuration is useful for trailer-mounted light towers that must move frequently between locations. Telescoping construction can also provide adjustable operating heights, allowing the operator to position equipment according to site conditions and obstruction clearance.
