What is a Non-penetrating Roof Mount for Portable Masts?

A non-penetrating roof mount for portable masts is a structural mounting system designed to support a temporary or semi-permanent mast on a building roof without drilling, bolting or penetrating the roof membrane.

These systems are commonly used for portable communication antennas, wireless networking equipment, surveillance cameras, weather instruments and other equipment requiring an elevated mounting position.

Structural Components

A typical non-penetrating portable mast mount consists of a steel or aluminum support frame connected to a mast base or vertical mounting sleeve. The frame extends outward from the mast to create a stable footprint on the surface or roof. Weight is distributed across multiple contact points or protective pads rather than concentrated beneath the mast itself. The mast may be secured on temporary concrete pads or weighed down with sand bags depending on the size of the mast.

Roof loading must be considered independently from mast stability. A roof may have sufficient area for the mounting system but still have limitations on allowable concentrated or distributed loads. The structural capacity of the roof deck, framing members and supporting structure should be verified before installation.

Benefits and Installation

An advantage of using a non-penetrating roof mount is preservation of the roof's surface and waterproofing system. Roof membranes or surfaces can be damaged when fasteners, anchors or penetrations are installed incorrectly or when the penetration deteriorates over time. A non-penetrating system eliminates these roof penetrations, reducing the potential for water intrusion and simplifying installation.

Installation can generally be performed using conventional tools without cutting into the roofing system and the equipment can be removed when the temporary deployment is complete. Proper installation is essential to maintain stability and protect the roof.
