Benefits of High Grade PMMA Optics in LED Lights

PMMA high-grade optics are optical components manufactured from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and used to control, distribute and shape light produced by LED lamps. PMMA is a thermoplastic polymer known for its optical transparency, relatively low light absorption and ability to be precision molded. This material provides optical clarity with up to 92% light transmission when used in LED lighting systems.

Larson Electronics GAU-LTL LED lights feature PMMA high purity optics for powerful light performance and accurate beam distribution. These IP67 rated lights are ideal for outdoor lighting, light towers, stadiums, docks and other locations requiring reliable illumination.

Outdoor Lighting

In LED lighting, high-grade PMMA is useful for lenses, reflectors and secondary optics where efficient transmission and controlled light distribution are important. PMMA has an advantage in outdoor LED lighting because it provides resistance to ultraviolet exposure and weathering compared with low-grade transparent plastics.

Properly formulated PMMA can maintain optical clarity for extended periods when exposed to sunlight and weather. This characteristic is important for streetlights, floodlights, portable lighting equipment and other outdoor systems.

Light Performance and Utilization

One of the benefits of high-transmission PMMA optics is improved light output. Light performance is affected by the surface finish of the optic. A clear, polished PMMA surface generally maximizes transmission and maintains a well-defined beam. The optical design of a PMMA lens determines how LED light is distributed. A simple clear PMMA lens can provide relatively broad transmission with minimal diffusion, while a precision-engineered lens can produce narrow, medium, wide or asymmetric beam patterns.
