Comparing Single Pole and Multi Pole Utility Wood Pole Structures

Selecting between single pole and multi pole utility wood pole structures requires balancing structural performance, installation cost, maintenance considerations and operational needs.

Both configurations are widely used throughout electric utilities, telecommunications and industrial power distribution systems, but each is designed to address different structural requirements.

Single Pole Structure

A single pole utility structure consists of one wood pole supporting power or communication equipment. This is the most common configuration for distribution systems operating from low voltage through medium voltage levels.

Single pole structures require fewer materials, less excavation, fewer hardware components and shorter installation times. Utility crews can typically install a single pole with minimal site preparation. On the other hand, multi pole structures require additional poles, cross members, anchors, hardware and labor, making them more expensive to construct. However, their increased capacity may eliminate the need for steel structures or specialized foundations in demanding applications.

Pole-mounted transformers, capacitor banks and sectionalizing switches are frequently installed on single pole structures because the applied mechanical loads remain within the pole's design capacity.

Multi Pole Structure

Multi pole structures utilize two or more wood poles connected by cross members, braces or steel hardware to form a strong structural system. These assemblies distribute mechanical loads among multiple poles, allowing greater strength and stability than a single pole can provide.

Multi pole structures are effective for carrying heavy conductor loads, supporting large transformers and accommodating transmission line angles. H-frame wood structures are used on sub-transmission systems ranging from approximately 69 kV to 138 kV, where increased conductor spacing and higher mechanical loading demand greater structural capacity.
