Top 3 Types of Forklift Safety Lights

Forklift safety lights provide an essential visual warning system, projecting highly visible boundaries and directional signals directly onto the warehouse floor. Safety lights are used in such work areas, as loud surroundings can reduce the effectiveness of audible alarms (such as backup beepers) due to ambient noise or ignored due to alarm fatigue.

1. Zone Lights

Commonly referred to as Red Zone or Danger Zone lights, perimeter lights are mounted on the left and right sides of the forklift. They project a continuous linear beam on the ground during use.

These side-boundary lights establish a strict visual exclusion zone for workers. The perimeter lines mark hazard areas, keeping workers at a safe distance to prevent injuries.

2. Spotlights

Directional spotlights project a concentrated, high-intensity beam of light on the floor, positioned roughly 10 to 15 feet ahead of or behind the forklift. This gives pedestrians advance notice of an approaching vehicle before it emerges from an aisle or a blind intersection.

Usually mounted on the rear overhead guard, blue spotlights project light on the floor when the forklift travels in reverse. Blue is chosen because it contrasts sharply against standard concrete flooring and is rarely used for other facility signals. Functionally identical to blue lights, red spotlights are often mounted on the front of the vehicle to indicate forward travel. The color choice can vary based on facility contrast needs or specific color-coding protocols.

3. Strobe Lights

Beacons are high-intensity flashing or rotating lights mounted to the highest point of the forklift. Unlike directional lights that project patterns on the floor, beacons provide 360-degree, direct-line-of-sight visibility over long distances.

Beacons warn operators of other vehicles and nearby workers that an active forklift is in the area. They typically operate in amber, red or blue, and use distinct flashing profiles to signal different types of equipment or utility tasks.
