In residential areas worldwide, the use of lights typically increases during the holidays. At the end of the year, many individuals setup lighting displays at home and hold celebrations with family and close friends. Such activities consume electricity, resulting in a spike in billing at the end of the month.
Cost Savings and LEDs
There are several ways to ease electricity consumption during holiday periods. One of the most direct and efficient method is switching to LED lights. Compared to other lighting technologies, LEDs utilize roughly 30 percent less power. This makes the units ideal for lights around the home that are left on throughout the night.
From a long-term perspective, LED lights also come with extended lifespans, capable of exceeding 50,000+ hours before replacement. The lights are favored by people living in rugged locations, as the units are solid state and lightweight.
In the US, a handful of utility companies across the country are recommending the use of LEDs over incandescent and other types of traditional lamps. This year, recommendations stemmed from the Nebraska Public Power District and Minnesota-based Xcel Energy.
Switching to LED Lights
Transitioning to LED lights is a straightforward process. One could simply replace outdated lamps and ornaments with incandescent bulbs with LEDs. For a slow and cost-effective transition, individuals may also opt to first replace lights in parts of the home that host numerous activities or require constant illumination. Additionally, installing LED-ready bulbs at home is another great option to consider. This would allow individuals to retain holiday lamps and lighting decorations, while benefiting from LED technology.
Lastly, for people who are concerned about handling hot lamps, LEDs are known to operate at cooler temperatures, resulting in safer operation. The lights are cool to touch – even after being left on for hours at a time.
