LED stands for “Light Emitting Diode.” An LED is a
small piece of semi conducting material that is impregnated with various
compounds. When electrical current is passed through this “doped” semi
conducting material, the electrical energy is emitted by the semi conductor as
“photons” or, light. The process by which LEDs produce light is known as
electroluminescent and it is a much more efficient process than that
used in incandescent lamps. This process creates little heat and more of
the current applied to the diode is emitted as light. With less energy
radiated as heat, more energy is emitted as light, giving
LEDs much greater efficiency than incandescent lamps. |
 |
LED Advantages and
Benefits |
Information |
LED Power and
Efficiency The typical ratings for
the amount of illumination a lamp can produce are expressed as “lumens” and are
based on how many lumens a lamp can produce relative the amount of energy
consumed. Lumens themselves represent the amount of light that hits an object at
a given distance. The typical incandescent bulb is rated at approximately 15
lumens per watt and the higher efficiency halogen bulbs can only achieve at best
approximately 25 lumens per watt. LEDs on the other hand, even in their lowest
quality versions, achieve approximately 50-60 lumens per watt, with some
manufacturers now producing LEDS which produce 160 lumens per watt. This gives
any LED equipped lighting equipment a significant and distinct advantage over
traditional incandescent lighting equipment.
LED Longevity While a typical incandescent is rated at only 1000-3000 hours,
LEDs are typically rated at anywhere from 20,000-50,000 hours. This means that
an LED lamp can last for several years after installation before requiring
replacement. Although several factors such as LED quality, how well it
dissipates heat and how well the current supplied by the LED fixtures regulating
apparatus is managed have a great deal to do with how long an LED may last, it
is generally accepted that when properly designed and installed, LEDs will far
outlive most other forms of lighting equipment. Larson Electronics LEDs are of
high quality and excellent design, ensuring the maximum amount of operational
life possible.
LED Efficiency = Cost
Effectiveness Up to 90% of an incandescent bulbs
energy is wasted as heat created by the electrical resistance of the filament,
making them more effective as heaters than as sources of illumination! An
incandescent bulb produces approximately 15 lumens of light per watt while
quality LEDs in contrast produce 60 or more lumens per watt. This equates to a
lot more light being produced with a great deal less energy. While a 60 watt
incandescent will produce 900 total lumens, an LED of only 15 watts can produce
the same amount. That’s ¼ the amount of energy for the same amount of light. If
we also factor in the inherently long life of LEDs, the savings grow even
larger, as LEDs outlast most types of lamps by a margin of three, five, or even
ten to one. This means that it could take up to ten traditional incandescent
bulbs to equal the lifespan of a single LED lamp. For a business that spends
$450,000 on lighting, switching all their lighting to LEDs could theoretically
cut their lighting costs by 50+%, resulting in net savings of $250,000 or more.

About the University of California Study of LEDs and Toxic
Materials
A recent study released by the University of
California, Irvine has gained some traction in the news lately as it targets the
rapidly growing popularity of LEDs as an environmentally friendly replacement
for the incandescent lamp and a better alternative than the compact
fluorescent...This study states that LEDs contain toxic materials in their
construction and that these materials do pose a potential health and
environmental hazard. Media reports have been quick to report these findings,
but upon closer inspection of the report itself there appears to be several
caveats that present a great deal of equivocation not present in the media
reports...Taken at face value, the media headlines for toxic materials having
been found in LEDs do indeed appear ominous. However, aside from the somewhat
sensational claims being made, further consideration reveals little real need
for concern on the part of the consumer. [...]

LEDs in Machine Vision Systems
Effective machine vision requires a higher degree
of lighting accuracy and efficiency to form detailed images than the human eye.
To increase the effectiveness of machine vision it is necessary to produce
sufficient light intensity and ensure that uniform coverage is also produced as
well. This intensity and uniform coverage helps in bringing out all the features
and characteristics of the object being scanned, providing an accurate picture
with which the machine can then make detailed and reliable comparisons and
records with. LEDs provide a degree of control and intensity not easily achieved
with the halogen lamps previously used. Rather than rely on complex light
directing devices, LEDs can be arranged in an application specific manner,
providing light exactly where it is needed. LEDs also offer the ability to be
coupled with electronics that allow lighting to be “pulsed”, creating a lighting
solution well suited to the needs of high speed imaging that is often associated
with machine vision. [...] |

LED Boat Lighting: Upgrade to Sensible Power
Management Those who spend
prolonged periods out in open water and make overnight cruises a regular part of
their cruising itinerary are particularly good candidates for a major boat
lighting upgrade and today’s technology has just the item to fit the bill. A lot
of excitement has been generated lately around the fast growing role of LEDs in
the marine lighting industry. Low power consumption, good light quality, high
durability and extreme longevity have all combined to produce a source of
electrical light that [...] |

Marine LED Light Bars: The Highest Performance in the Worst
Conditions
A manufacturer may
claim a light is waterproof, but their idea of waterproof might be a light that
can withstand a light sprinkling of rain and nothing more. Reputable
manufacturers will include clear explanations with their lighting equipment that
details which agencies and standards their equipment is in compliance with. For
instance, an LED unit like the Larson Electronics LEDP10W-240E LED
Light Bar carries
clear documentation showing it is rated IP68 in accordance with NEMA
certification. This tells a boat owner that this particular light is waterproof
beyond at least 1 meter and sealed against intrusion by particles such as dust
as specified by “IP” standards. [...] |

LEDs: A Natural Fit for Boating
Aside from electrically powered motors, one of the
biggest draws on a boat's electrical reserves is its nighttime lighting
equipment. Navigation lighting, interior illumination, and anchor lights all
present a steady and sometimes heavy draw on electrical systems, and usually
cannot be compromised on because of legal and safety concerns. Bulky generators,
bigger batteries, and higher amperage alternators represent the usual answers to
increased energy loads created by the heavy demands of a well-equipped modern
watercraft. Often overlooked however, is lowering the overall energy demands of
this equipment itself. LED lights, upon their introduction into the commercial
marine marketplace, were quickly recognized as a possible effective solution to
the ever-growing demands of boat’s electrical requirements. Boating enthusiasts
have been quick to notice this improvement and LEDs are now fast becoming the
preferred choice for marine applications. Cabin lighting is an area where
substantial improvements can be realized by replacement of incandescent bulbs
with LEDs.
