02/20/16 Voltage Drop in Low Voltage Lighting Systems

Because of the risks associated with flammable gases, dusts, and particles in hazardous work areas, low voltage lighting systems are a natural choice to increase safety in areas where the potential for combustion exists. This becomes especially challenging when lights must be run at long distances with limited power sources. Low voltage systems typically run on 12-24 volts DC, but even within this lower range, a precise balance between distance, wattage load, and correct wire gauge must be [...]

02/16/16 Lumen vs Foot-Candles – Which Is More Accurate for Measuring Illumination?

When a customer is looking for lights, the most common question posed is “how bright is this light?” As lighting technology improves, the standard measurements of illumination aren’t always the most accurate in calculating a light’s output. Understanding how each rating is determined will help you choose the best fixture for an application. [...]

The insights found in the report are applicable to business owners, engineers and lighting specialists. [...]

02/10/16 Benefits and Applications of Explosion Proof LED Lighting in Confined Spaces

The complex and hazardous nature of confined spaces present numerous risks for workers. Because of this, many businesses that operate in hazardous locations make use of explosion proof lights to prevent the ignition of flammable gases and dust particles. LED technology has contributed to the features of explosion proof lights by making them more reliable, sturdy and cost-effective. [...]

05/05/13 LED Lighting Meets the Challenges of Mine Illumination

A great deal of study has gone into the effects of mine lighting on safety and worker productivity. The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research has been responsible for much of this study and continues to pursue new information and development towards better mine lighting standards. Of all the lighting methods and technologies currently under study and development, LED lighting technology has demonstrated some of the most promising results. One area where significant developments have occurred [...]

03/01/13 Savings and Incentives for Lighting Upgrades

08/18/12 Mobile Light Tower Options: Modern Outdoor Lighting Systems

For most mid to large scale worksites, the most popular light towers are by far mobile lighting systems mounted to towable trailers and equipped with their own diesel generators. These systems are ideal for continuous use, and depending upon the size of the generator capable of illuminating anywhere from three to ten acres effectively. Masts for these towers are generally folding or telescoping designs, with some incorporating a combination of both for both excellent height adjustment and compac [...]

06/01/12 Mobile Light Towers for Large Scale Scene and Event Illumination

For large scale applications, there are few alternatives better than self contained mobile light tower systems. Usually comprised of a towable trailer, generator, control center, extendable boom, and lighting assemblies, mobile light towers provide extreme high power illumination in a system that is fully self contained and mobile. These systems can be towed by vehicles or heavy equipment to the desired location and once in position prepared for operation, extended, and then switched on, usually [...]

01/09/12 LED Mine Lighting and Worker Safety

Utilizing controlled tests involving standard mining cap lights, common commercial grade LEDs, and a special LED mining light design of their own making, they found that for most intents and purposes, LEDs provided a greater degree of contrast and improved threat detection times as shown by test subjects. Particularly in the case of workers over the age of 40, with 43 years being the average age of mine workers, contrasting of LED illuminated objects was improved 43%. Additionally, threat detect [...]

12/20/11 Mine Lighting and Improving Effectiveness and Safety with LEDs

Electrical lighting for mines has predominantly been of a few specific types including incandescent lamps, HID luminaires, and fluorescent tubes. The problems with such mine lighting technologies stems largely from their power requirements and low durability factors. Each of these lighting types is of a construction that utilizes fragile materials such as glass and thin wire filaments that hold little resistance to abusive handling and conditions. Compounding the durability issue is the hazardou [...]

11/16/11 The Higher Cost of LEDs: The Reasons May Surprise You

China, with its heavy emphasis on developing its economic and political power, has seen an explosion of potential in the market for its rare earth minerals and as a result taken several steps towards managing this now almost indispensible resource. Manufacturers of everything from to cell phones, televisions, and solar power equipment and yes, LEDs, rely on a steady and adequate supply of these minerals. In 2010, manufacturers became quite alarmed when China announced its plans to cut back on it [...]

10/05/11 Modern Mining Lights: From Birds to Flames to LEDs

It wouldn’t be until 1902 that practical electrical lamps were introduced in mines and removed the need for open flames. Electrical lamps greatly reduced the possibility of fires and explosions, but again, by today’s standards they were hardly safe. Early electric lamps got hot, the batteries were unwieldy and leaked acids, and shattered bulbs and shorted wires were all too capable of causing an accident. By the 1930’s electric lighting was the only mine lighting in use, although the older Davy [...]
