02/27/17 HMI Lighting on Set and Why it Needs to Change

Hydrargyrum medium-arc iodide (HMI) lamps are the current standard for lights in the film industry. Unfortunately, HMIs are also staggeringly expensive and fragile, making them a liability during filming. [...]

02/10/17 Lighting Applications- Cool White vs Warm White

Color temperature ratings can be used to accentuate various characteristics of an environment. The practice was discovered in 1880s by William Kelvin, a British physicist. The researcher experimented with different color temperatures using a block of carbon that was heated at different settings. These days, Kelvin’s findings are being applied to improve and fine-tune lighting conditions in rooms and buildings. [...]

08/16/16 How Much Light is Enough Light

Lighting choices vary, depending on the needs of the applicable location and personal preferences of individuals in the area. A “one size fits all” solution is rarely available when determining the lighting requirements of multiple environments. For example, lighting configurations for an office may differ, compared to a packaging warehouse. Even if the two facilities were the same size, the type of work being carried out in the buildings dictate the properties or characteristics [...]

01/06/14 Is LED Lighting Really that Efficient and Can it Really Save that Much Money?

This means we can hang our LED fixture over our target surface, and get nearly all of the initial 1,000 lumens directed downwards towards it without the need for a reflector or the losses than come with the use of one. (Fig C) So, we could in effect actually use an LED fixture producing 600 lumens and using only 6 watts, to direct the same amount of light to our target as a 10 watt metal halide producing 1,000 lumens. [...]

01/02/14 The Lesser Known Issues LED Lighting Technology Faces

LEDs are a solid state form of lighting that demonstrates a radical departure from the way we usually produce illumination. As a result, there have been new challenges developers and manufacturers have had to overcome before LEDs could be considered a viable lighting technology. LEDs are solid state in design, and rather than produce light through the process of incandescence, (heating a wire until it glows and radiates light), produce light through a process called electroluminescence. [...]

09/04/13 Basic Properties of High Power Light Towers

Light towers both portable and mobile can be fitted with a wide array of lighting assemblies. The most common lamp types used on portable towers are halogen lamps of 500 to 1,000 watts. Portable towers can also be fitted with metal halide lamps, but this necessitates the inclusion of ballast assemblies as well, increasing the towers weight and complexity somewhat. LED lamps have recently become quite popular on portable towers due to their smaller size, high output and efficiency, and extreme d [...]

07/28/13 Avoiding Issues When Working with Alternative LED Lighting Systems

The very fast development of LED lighting technology and the very high potential they carry has resulted in hundreds of manufacturers and importers of LED based devices such as drivers, chips, and controllers appearing almost overnight, which has made it difficult at best for some professionals to ensure the equipment they are installing is reliable. Quality control and standardization among all these new suppliers is in large part almost non existent, and component compatibility and interchang [...]

05/05/13 LED Lighting Meets the Challenges of Mine Illumination

A great deal of study has gone into the effects of mine lighting on safety and worker productivity. The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research has been responsible for much of this study and continues to pursue new information and development towards better mine lighting standards. Of all the lighting methods and technologies currently under study and development, LED lighting technology has demonstrated some of the most promising results. One area where significant developments have occurred [...]

05/01/13 LED Lighting and Effectively Managing Heat Production

Unlike traditional incandescent lamps which are designed to produce light by using the electrical resistance of a wire filament to radiate light energy and thus run extremely hot, LEDs on the other hand are quite sensitive to increases in temperature. Like traditional lamps, the lifespan of an LED is measured in hours, however, during the course of operation, the light output of an LED exhibits a gradual decline. [...]

06/29/12 Heavy Duty Light Tower Basics

In order to make the best choice of light tower an operator should be familiar with some of the most common tower and lamp combinations. Metal halide lamps currently dominate the tower lighting industry due to their high output and good light quality, while high pressure sodium lamps offer poor light quality but excellent efficiency. LED lamps are quickly gaining in popularity due to their high output, good light quality, and extreme long life and durability, but bring with them a higher price t [...]

06/01/12 Mobile Light Towers for Large Scale Scene and Event Illumination

For large scale applications, there are few alternatives better than self contained mobile light tower systems. Usually comprised of a towable trailer, generator, control center, extendable boom, and lighting assemblies, mobile light towers provide extreme high power illumination in a system that is fully self contained and mobile. These systems can be towed by vehicles or heavy equipment to the desired location and once in position prepared for operation, extended, and then switched on, usually [...]

04/03/12 The Basics of Ingress Protection Ratings and What They Mean

Some important considerations to keep in mind are that although an item may be rated as ”IP68”, this does not automatically infer the item can be safely operated at any depth for any period of time without failure. For IP68 ratings, manufacturers choose the specified depth which must be beyond 1 meter at which the enclosure will protect against the ingress of water. Normally, as with industrial lighting equipment or marine lighting intended to be operated for extended periods beyond depths of 1 [...]

03/16/12 Reducing the Financial and Environmental Impact of Lighting with LEDs

LED lighting currently holds the best potential for achieving the energy efficiency standards now mandated by the federal government without placing an increased burden on the management of toxic wastes. Although there remains some skepticism as to whether or not LEDs can effectively fill the illumination roles currently held by HID and fluorescent technologies, real world applications are proving that not only do LEDs have the potential to do so, they are in many cases a superior alternative. [...]

02/17/12 Delivered Lumens versus Total Lumen Output: LEDs and Traditional Lighting Comparisons

For most forms of traditional lighting, since the light is radiated in all directions, we usually need to include reflectors, lenses and diffusers in order to direct as much of the light as possible towards where it is needed. The result of this is called delivered light, and it is a more effective measure of how well a lamp performs than simply taking into account total lumen production. For instance, if we take a simple 100 watt incandescent bulb producing 1500 lumens and put it into a simple [...]

02/02/12 High Power Light Towers: Nighttime Construction Lighting of Choice

Some of the most serious issues associated with the use of large light towers concern glare and dark spots. For drivers approaching a nighttime road construction project, the fast and extreme increase in brightness can be difficult to adjust to after miles of driving under relatively low light levels. This problem is exacerbated by light towers that are not properly adjusted to direct light onto the work site without creating glare for oncoming traffic. [...]

01/09/12 Efficiency and Long Life only Part of LED Lighting Benefits

Since LEDs are so small, yet produce so many lumens per watt, they can be installed into a huge variety of fixtures that would be impractical for a normal incandescent bulb. They can be set up in clusters as a replacement for incandescent bulbs, arrayed in strips, mounted in rows as is common with LED light bars for boats, and even mounted singly in tiny fixtures for specialty applications. This compact size and versatile installation capability makes LEDs ideal for recessed and hidden lighting, [...]

11/22/11 The Comprehensive Potential of LEDs in U.S. Commercial/Industrial Operations

While reducing energy consumption across the board holds great potential for reducing the United States’ dependence on fossil fuels and foreign energy sources, this is not the only significant area of improvement. By instituting higher energy efficiency standards and switching to alternative forms of lighting such as LEDs, industrial/commercial operations stand to improve their productivity and competitiveness on the world markets through reduced operating costs and improved productivity. [...]

10/04/11 New Energy Standards Changing How We Look at Lighting

Most manufacturers have traditionally labeled their lighting products according to wattage and lumen output. It’s always been understood that higher wattage means a brighter bulb, and that higher lumen output means a brighter bulb as well. With incandescent bulbs this has been essentially true. Unfortunately, due to the unique properties of LEDs, wattage and lumens are no longer a simple baseline that can be relied on to deliver an accurate perception of a lamps performance. An LED lamp may prod [...]

09/14/11 Options for Meeting the Lighting Requirements of the 2005 Energy Policy Act and the Energy Independence Act of 2007

These efficiency standards apply to more than just incandescent bulbs and will have an impact on all forms of lighting. As a result, it’s important that consumers begin looking ahead and planning a change to the more efficient lighting types that will soon be taking the place of less efficient forms that cannot meet the new standards. LEDs, high efficiency halogens, compact fluorescent, high output fluorescent tubes and electronically controlled fluorescent ballasts will soon represent the large [...]
